About Dean

Musician and composer living in Tasmania with a Masters of Music in contemporary voice, a discography of new composed works for string quartet, who began his music career as a drummer.  

Releases include In Time, Arco Set, The London Suite, 4PM First Drafts Volume 1, 2, and 3featuring Dean’s own project orchestra The Arco Set.

Commissioned works for film - Sixteen Legs (featuring a collaboration with Kate Miller-Heidke recorded with the Tasmanian Symphony Orchestra), theatre - You and Me and the Space Between by Terrapin Puppet Theatre.

Live events - Dark MOFO Oguh Oguh burning 2018-19 and FireLight17 – the worlds largest drive-in.

Festivals include Mona Foma The Arco Set, King Ubu, The Juliet Letters, Dark Mofo Tim Passes, With Ukraine, Ten Days on the Island - Facing North andLeonard’s Beautiful Pictures, Melbourne Sydney Darwin and Brisbane festivals and Imaginate in Edinburgh. In 2019, Dean performed at the Lincoln Centre NYC for three weeks with Terrapin Puppet Theatre.

In 2022, for Dark Mofo, the sinfonia With Ukraine was composed in eight daysraising $138,000 for displaced familieseffected by the war in Ukraine

Book publishing - In early 2024 Dean published his first book 4PM 150 First Drafts, a collection of journals and essays on creativity from the first 150 days of the 4PM installation at Mona 2021/22.

4PM:

4PM began in 2021, and has since run its fifth season at Mona with a growing focus for public discourse on the elements of creativity. The installation has already seen Dean write over 600 new works for string ensemble in public. In April of 2026, 4PM was listed in the New York Times as one of the best things to do in that week.

In 2016, Dean produced new music by Sting in collaboration with David Walsh of MONA. The same year he was commissioned by the Governor of Tasmania to write a new work to celebrate Her Majesty the Queens 90th birthday.

Dean has toured with Terrapin Puppet Theatre through China, Japan, the U.K and the U.S.

Dean is also a Winston Churchill Memorial Trust Fellow, having travelled and published a work for a composition research project across eight countries.

Dean also leads the Mona Music Ensemble which performs regularly on site and every open day in Faro restaurant.
