Dean Stevenson :-
A brief biography and summary of his parts.
"It's rock with a brown leather jacket and my grandfather's shoes."
Lately the recently released CD has dominated the news, but there's still more to uncover...
The proudest Tasmanian resident he knows, Dean Stevenson finds the idea
of talking about his home intoxicating and wells with passion about the
place. Ask him if it's a good place to live and he'll talk you under
the table about Tasmania with enthusiasm for this place he says is a
power in everything he does. Such is the way he talks, almost sings, of
his home. Originally a resident of Melbourne however, he grew up
through the rich tapestry of music Melbourne offers and credits the
many bands he played in over the years as the most amazing menagerie of
styles and musical class rooms.
"I wouldn't give up a night of it..."
Recipient of the Hobart Conservatorium's 'Directors Prize' for
outstanding musical performance in 2003, Dean is never one to put
himself before the song and never has. "I've spent years as a working
musician in every kind of genre I can think of and some I'd prefer not
to remember. But the payoff for such bredth is the most awesome
exposure to and inner relationship with so much musical expression and
experience. I've spent a year in the back line of a Trad Jazz band,
played festivals with blue grass bands, played gypsy punk to outdoor
winter festivals and suits alike, over 100 nights in an acid jazz band
'Recliner' squeezed in a club corner against a Leslie speaker, played
over 70 nights of 70's brit rock with '4 Letter Fish' in the smokiest
bars I've ever had the displeasure of breathing in, a year in the Texas
blues band 'The Conrays', bought a room to tears with Janette Geri,
toured Australia playing country songs with Mick Thomas (Weddings,
Parties, Anything /Sure Thing), played far too late and too loud with
Nigel Kennedy (violin)... and it's all fabulous! I wouldn't give up a
night of it. The music I make now is the direct result of all those
shows from all over the country."
"A good song is not easy to write, a meaningful one even harder."
Dean Stevenson is a gifted writer and performer of strong sentiment
without being sentimental. "The listener has to own my songs as much as
me" says Dean having just finished recording his third album IN TIME.
Full of lush rock/pop sounds and songs from gentle caress to pushing
rock, Dean is celebrating a genre that has been with him since youth
but this does not define his purest musical expression. "If I put all
my favourite ideas together in one album it would the most weird arse,
lumpy roller coaster ride with little continuity at all as a journey.
So on this album I've put my best pop foot forward to be true to the
genre and write good solid songs."
